Former Champion Says Canelo Alvarez Being Allowed To Duck David Benavidez ‘Disgusting’
Eyepix

Chris Algieri, a former boxing champion, has had enough with Canelo Alvarez.

Over the past several months, Algieri has been critical of Alvarez and the fights he has taken. Now, it goes to another level.

David Benavidez, an unbeaten fighter with 24 career knockouts, has been the next rumored opponent for Alvarez. Some, including Algieri, believe he is ducking the prize fighter because he is too tough of an opponent.

“The governing bodies who are allowing him to sit on those belts are disgusting,” Algieri said. “What the hell is going on with Canelo not wanting to fight David Benavidez?”

Algieri, who previously held the WBO title and also found success in kickboxing as a world champion, has long been an advocate for putting the top fighters together.

Canelo Alvarez Comes Under First By Mike Tyson

A spring fight has been rumored for Alvarez as an opponent remains unannounced. Recently, a split with Premier Boxing Champions has resulted in many opponents being discussed.

Jaime Munguia was one of those just prior to the champion leaving PBC.

Even Mike Tyson has taken his anger out on Alvarez, calling it a shame while attending the recent PFL event in Saudi Arabia.

“What’s wrong with Canelo?” Tyson said (thanks to Marca.com for the quotes). “Is he afraid of losing? Doesn’t he want to give the fans the fight they want to see?”

Tyson’s comments echo those of Algieri, though the former two-time heavyweight champion extended his thoughts.

“Do you not respect the legacy of the great Mexican champions who faced the best regardless of the money?” Tyson said. “This is a shame for boxing and for Mexico.”
