Elite Louisville Cardinals RB to Transfer Twice in 1 Offseason for 3rd Transfer of Career
Scott Taetsch-USA TODAY Sports

According to On3 , Louisville Cardinals running back Peny Boone will enter the transfer portal for the second time this offseason.

Boone originally transferred to Louisville to join head coach Jeff Brohm’s squad in January. In 2023, he shined as the go-to back for the Toledo Rockets. Before he was at Toledo, he played for the Maryland Terrapins in a running back room that didn’t see him get much playing time.

While he played best with the Toledo Rockets, Peny Boone does have Power 5 experience outside of Louisville Cardinals practices

Although he didn’t contribute much to the Maryland Terrapins offense in the first two years of his collegiate career, Peny Boone does have experience at the Power 5 level.

During his time with Maryland from 2020 to 2021, he amassed a total of 258 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on just under 60 carries.

His 4.4 yards per carry on limited touches at Maryland was enough for him to garner interest as a lead back in a Group of 5 school, such as the Toledo Rockets. Boone, a Detroit native, moved on from Big 10 football for a chance to prove himself at a lower level.

Peny Boone was elite as the RB for the Toledo Rockets, which landed him a spot on the Louisville Cardinals.

In his two years with the Toledo Rockets, Peny Boone proved that he belonged at a higher level. In 2023, he earned MAC Offensive Player of the Year honors with his elite play at the running back position.

Boone held the nation’s No. 8 spot in rushing yards with 1,400 yards on 194 carries for a staggering 7.2 yards per carry, which was good for seventh-best in the nation. He found the endzone 15 times on the ground with a receiving touchdown to boot.

Boone has been dubbed “Baby Bus” by many as his 6-foot-1, 242-pound frame makes him incredibly difficult to bring down. According to PFF, his 4,26 yards per carry after contact was fourth-best in the nation among running backs that had over 150 carries.

Despite being a massive running back, Boone has elite athleticism that makes him a more lean, athletic version of Pittsburgh Steelers legend Jerome “The Bus” Bettis.

Boone chose to go to Lousiville over the Florida State Seminoles and the Kentucky Wildcats. His high-level production at Toledo will likely not make it difficult for him to find another spot at an elite school.

Peny Boone spent just three months with the Louisville Cardinals

Peny Boone made it just over three months with the Louisville Cardinals and head coach Jeff Brohm before deciding to take his talents elsewhere.

According to an article from 247 Sports, Boone was praising the Cardinals’ offensive line just two weeks ago.

“This transition, just knowing the guys in my room and speed,” Boone said two weeks ago. “And, just really getting used to my line. I’ve played with good lines in the past, but it’s the best one by far, so just getting caught up on the speed of it. It’s basically just showing what I can do in different run types and situations.”

Boone was competing with fellow running backs Maurice Turner, Kejuan Brown, freshman Isaac Brown and Miami Hurricanes transfer Don Chaney for reps with the starting offense.

Whether Boone didn’t like his role in the offense or just decided that Brohm’s pass-heavy style of offense wasn’t for him remains unclear. He will likely garner interest from many elite teams upon re-entering the transfer portal.
