Former Georgia QB believes LSU will be better than Alabama in 2023

Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray has a bit of credibility when it comes to discussing SEC football — and that's a bit of an understanding.

Murray was the star quarterback of the Bulldogs from 2010-13 and is still the SEC's leader in all-time passing yards (13,166) and passing touchdowns (121).

Recently asked to evaluate two of Georgia's biggest SEC rivals — Alabama and LSU — on the "3 and Out" podcast by John Middlekauff (h/t On3), the former UGA quarterback gave the nod to the Tigers over their arch rival, the Crimson Tide.

“The difference between LSU and Alabama this year is Alabama has more depth,” Murray said. “I mean, they’re two deep, which is just them recruiting at a high level for a long time.

“LSU has built depth this offseason. They’ve done a great job in the portal. They’ve done a great job recruiting, but it’s not to the level of Alabama. But, if you asked me today, if you just want to compare starter vs. starter, LSU has more, I would say if you did a whole point category, LSU would get more points for me than Alabama if we want to break it down.”

Just looking at a few major positions, Murray's opinion holds up.

It's especially apparent at quarterback, where LSU's Jayden Daniels is a preseason Heisman contender. The Crimson Tide still don't know who will be replacing Bryce Young.

“Especially at the big-time areas. I think they’re better at quarterback. I think with their transfer running back that they have in there, which is kind of a coin flip, I think they’ve got better tackles, I think they’ve got better receivers, got a better tight end. Offensively, they’re better and they’ve got the quarterback. I mean, that’s the big hiccup. You know this," Murray said. "In today’s game, you need a QB, and right now for Alabama, we don’t know who that quarterback’s gonna be."

The Crimson Tide currently have a battle for the starting quarterback spot that features former Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner, former five-star 2022 recruit Ty Simpson and Jalen Milroe, who threw for 111 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in his lone start in 2022 in replacement of an injured Young.
