Frisco Bowl QB matchup featured sons of former longtime NFL signal-callers

Owen McCown's Roadrunners (9-4) fell behind 14-0 early but scored 21 points in the second quarter on their way to a 35-17 victory and their first ever bowl win. UTSA had been 0-4 all-time in bowl games prior to Tuesday, per WFAA.com.

The son of former journeyman quarterback Josh McCown, Owen finished the game 22-for-31 for 251 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while adding eight carries for 38 yards. McCown (a freshman transfer from the University of Colorado) was making his first start of the year after sitting as far down as third on the depth chart earlier in the fall.

Senior starting quarterback Frank Harris missed the contest due to a shoulder injury.

Josh McCown was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft and played 17 NFL seasons for nine different teams.

In early October, the younger McCown and his team faced off against the son of another former NFL quarterback (Kurt Warner) in Temple University's E.J. Warner.

Cole Pennington's Thundering Herd finished the season 6-7 and also played Tuesday's contest without the quarterback who started most of their season. Sophomore Cam Fancher started 10 games but entered the transfer portal in early December.

The son of two-time AP Comeback Player of the Year Chad Pennington, Cole is also a redshirt freshman and played just two games in 2022. Pennington appeared in four games this season and went 15-for-33 for 258 passing yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in the loss against the Roadrunners.

Chad Pennington was selected by the New York Jets with the 18th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft and played 11 seasons. During his second AP Comeback Player of the Year campaign in 2008, he also finished as the MVP runner-up to Peyton Manning.
