According to David O’Brien of The Athletic , the Braves are bringing back veteran infielder Jason Kipnis on a minor-league deal. This might come as puzzling to some, given he was already on a minor-league pact before the Braves released him. However, had they retained Kipnis, it would have cost them a 100k retention bonus.

That might not seem like much in the grand scheme of things, but considering how cheap Liberty Media has been over the years, every penny counts. Kipnis was having a decent spring before the Braves released him, collecting seven hits in 29 at-bats. He’ll serve as valuable organizational depth that can be called up in a pinch, and if he gets hot with the stick, he could become a critical bench piece later in the season.
