Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks with a hip subluxation. The Washington Football Team quarterback was placed on injured reserve Tuesday while he recovers.

The injury occurred in the second quarter of Sunday’s 20-16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. A missed block by left tackle Charles Leno Jr. led to the vicious hit that put Fitzpatrick out.

Leno, who signed a one-year, $5 million contract after being released by the Chicago Bears in May, says he “feels terrible” for allowing the hit that injured Fitzpatrick.

“I feel terrible,” Leno told reporters Tuesday. “I know, I tell them all the time ‘I want to protect my quarterback’ and in that instance I did not.”

Leno now will be tasked with protecting the blindside of Taylor Heinicke. Heinicke will get the start Thursday night against the New York Giants. Washington is hoping to avoid a 0-2 start to the season. They’re also hoping Leno can shake off his whiffed block and keep Heinicke upright.
