Michigan State football has landed Indiana EDGE transfer Anthony Jones who began his career at Oregon two years ago.

Jonathan Smith loves himself some transfer portal action. The first-year Michigan State football coach has been active in the portal since taking over in the winter and he’s landed double-digit transfers.

Smith added to that number on Sunday night, just one day after the Spring Showcase with the commitment of Anthony Jones.

Jones is a former three-star recruit who committed to Oregon in the 2022 class and redshirted. He decided to transfer to Indiana before the 2023 season and he had 12 total tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss with the Hoosiers. Jones has appeared in 14 career games.

This is a big addition to the defensive side of the ball which showed that it had plenty of holes during the Spring Showcase. That side of the ball just had a tough time keeping up with Aidan Chiles, Nick Marsh, and Nathan Carter. Getting Jones to commit and add some depth to the edge rusher spot is important. He has the size at 6-foot-4 and 255 pounds to make an immediate impact off the edge.

Joe Rossi’s defense could use all the help it can get as the new defensive coordinator takes over a unit that was one of the worst in the Big Ten for years. Mel Tucker and Scottie Hazelton just couldn’t figure it out defensively and Rossi knows that the portal is going to help out massively.

This addition is a step in the right direction.

Smith’s involvement in the transfer portal has been a welcomed sight and he’s not nearly done using it before fall camp starts. The portal opened this past week and he’s already reached out to a handful of guys and has scheduled official visits with some big names. I’d expect him to add to the roster from the portal again in the near future.
