With the Field of Dreams game set to take place on Thursday evening, both teams are allowed to recall a 27th man for the event. The Chicago Cubs selected first baseman Alfonso Rivas from Triple-A Iowa to serve as their 27th man.

Rivas was sent down to Triple-A on July 31, just ahead of the trade deadline. That said, Rivas has seen quite a bit of time with the big club this year. In 71 games, Rivas is slashing .232/.313/.316 with three home runs and 24 RBI. Rivas has had moments of brilliance this season, but has struggled to consistently produce at the plate. However, his glove has been very good over at first base all season long. There is no guarantee he’ll stick with the club past Thursday’s game, but he has a cool opportunity to be in Dyersville, IA with his teammates.

Although not producing at a high level with the Cubs, Rivas has found a lot of success at Triple-A. In just 15 games this season over two separate stints, Rivas is slashing .351/.393/.526 with a home run, five doubles, and eight RBI. He has been very good, but has done it in a small sample size worth of games.

The Field of Dreams Game

The Cubs and Cincinnati Reds will do battle at 6:15 p.m. CDT from Dyersville, Iowa in tonight’s Field of Dreams game. For the Cubs, LHP Drew Smyly takes the bump while LHP Nick Lodolo takes the hill for the Reds. The game will be quite the event for the MLB and both teams after last year’s massive success.
