Cubs Understand Mistakes Slugger at Third

There were rumors in the offseason that the Chicago Cubs might trade Christopher Morel. After blasting 26 home runs in 2023, his value was likely at an all-time high around the league.

Despite the power surge, Morel could struggle to get time since he doesn't have a set position.

He's played each outfield spot, second base, third base, and even shortstop. However, he served as the team's DH for 61 of the 107 games he played last season.

Many expect him to play third base full-time this season.

As currently constructed, the logical position for him would be third base, since that's the only infield position without a clear starter.

With that comes new challenges, something that's already been an issue during Spring Training.

Morel has made mistakes at the hot corner, but manager Craig Counsell isn't overly concerned, saying, "I want action, balls hit to you," according to Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic.

Getting reps at third base is huge for Chicago and Morel.

The Cubs don't want to enter the season with a third baseman who can't make simple plays, and Morel wants to lockdown a starting spot for the foreseeable future.

Keeping his bat out of the lineup is where there can become issues.

There aren't many 24-year-olds who can slash .247/.313/.508 with 26 home runs and 17 doubles. Factor in a below-average lineup that could be worse than last season, and Morel getting daily at-bats becomes even more important.

Leaving a potential 30-plus home run bat out of the lineup is never the answer.

Spring Training is the ideal time for him to get his work in.

The coaching staff seems to understand that, and so does Morel.
