Ex-Yankees Slugger Reportedly Being Pursued By Red Sox According To Insider

It sounds like the Boston Red Sox are looking into signing a former member of the New York Yankees.

Boston has been looking for ways to improve the roster but hasn't been looking to break the bank. The Red Sox still have some holes to fill but likely won't make a major investment before the 2024 season kicks off.

It's unclear if the Red Sox even will make another move, but the club has been linked to multiple players. One utility man who Boston reportedly has pursued is former Cleveland Guardians, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, and Los Angeles slugger Gio Urshela, according to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.

"It remains relatively unlikely that the Red Sox will make major, impactful additions to their roster before Opening Day," Cotillo said. "But they’re still monitoring the free agent market on both sides of the ball.

"The Red Sox are among the teams who have expressed interest in free agent infielder Gio Urshela, a source confirmed Wednesday. They have not yet separated themselves from the pack or been an aggressor in Urshela’s (Miami Marlins). As of Feb. 7, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reported that Miami and Los Angeles had better offers on the table than the New York teams."

Urshela would be an intriguing pickup for the Red Sox. When he's healthy, he's a high-batting average player who still has some pop left in his bat. He wasn't able to stay on the field last season with the Angels, though, and appeared in just 62 games. 

If he's fully healthy, he could be a solid option for Boston to provide depth all over the diamond.
