Former Angels Manager Phil Nevin To Interview For San Deigo Padres Job
Kiyoshi Mio-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Angels are all quiet on their own front in regard to their open managerial position, whereas the San Diego Padres are being quite aggressive in their search for a new skipper.

The Padres and their star-studded lineup made up of Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Juan Soto, Xander Bogaerts, Blake Snell, Josh Hader and others, were unable to reach the postseason. In fact, their frustration on-field appeared to bleed into the clubhouse, which resulted in Bob Melvin jumping ship.

He has since found a home with the San Francisco Giants, a short ways from his old home with the Oakland Athletics, when current Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi worked together. One name that has floated around to replace Melvin has been Phil Nevin, who spent a little over a season as the Angels manager.

Nevin is already partially accustomed to working with multiple high-priced players, having managed Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon with the Angels. He, of course, would be joining a team that plans to shed a huge chunk of salary off their payroll before the start of the 2024 season.

Unless there are some outside names that begin to surface after the World Series, the list of managers with their names in the ring for open spots isn’t as tantalizing as in years past.

Angels third base coach Bill Haselman was among those considered with Giants

Recently, the team announced the addition of Dom Chiti to their Minor League ranks, after serving as the Angels bullpen coach during the 2021 season. Still being without a manager, the Angels themselves are quietly waiting for the 2023 World Series to conclude before making any hefty changes.

But with current staff, third base coach Bill Haselman was among internal candidates who received real interest for managerial positions with other clubs.

Haselman previously worked in the Los Angeles Dodgers coaching ranks, also with Zaidi.
