Former Dodger Tom Koehler Reacts to What LA is Doing with Andrew Toles

Earlier this week, the news came out that the Dodgers had once again renewed the contract of estranged outfielder Andrew Toles. Toles last played for the team in 2018 and has struggled with mental health issues since.

For each of the last now five seasons, the organization has renewed the 30-year-old's contract so he would retain access to health and mental care. Former Dodger pitcher Tom Koehler reacted to the story on Twitter on Friday where he commended the club and recalled his own experience as a member of the team.

"Saw it first hand how they treated me when I could provide nothing for them. I am not surprised they are helping Andrew. It's bigger than sports."

Koehler signed a one-year deal with the Dodgers ahead of the 2018 season but tore up his shoulder during the spring and eventually underwent mid-season shoulder surgery. He never officially suited up for LA but the team still awarded him with a National League Championship ring, a classy gesture Koehler appreciated.

For Toles and his family, this small move by the organization no doubt goes a long way in caring for Andrew. The former big leaguer made headlines in 2020 after being arrested for trespassing in Florida. His family eventually spoke about his ongoing battle with mental illness and their hope to get him back on track.
