Ginkel Dealing With Sore Elbow, Jameson Likely Out for 2024

On the second day of Spring Training, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo gave a couple injury updates on pitchers.

Right-hander Kevin Ginkel is currently dealing with right elbow soreness. Lovullo said the issue popped up last week and nothing showed up when they did imaging. The 29-year-old has emerged as a key piece of the D-backs bullpen, pitching to a 2.48 ERA in 65 1/3 innings and then 11 2/3 scoreless innings in the postseason.

"It's a little bit of a red flag at this point in time, we don't have to hustle through this. He threw a lot of baseball games for us last year. We're going to pull him back and start his clock a little later than most."

Lovullo does not expect Drey Jameson to pitch at all in the 2024 season. The 26-year-old suffered a torn UCL and underwent Tommy John surgery in September after a failed rehab attempt. The typical recovery time is 12-15 months, putting him in line to be as healthy as possible for what could be a critical 2025 season.

Right-hander Corbin Martin is a "full go" this spring. Martin was having a strong camp and making a case for a roster spot last season, but suffered a torn lat tendon and opted for surgery. Lovullo said he's throwing the ball well and is healthy again.

"He was right in the forefront in those conversations and then got hurt, it was a terrible day for all of us. I continued to remind him of that throughout the course of his rehab. He's picked up right where he left off. We want to see him go out and execute, and [we'll] make the best decision moving forward for him."

Humberto Castellanos has lost 20-30 pounds after changing his diet. Lovullo thought Castellanos was a different player until the two greeted each other. The right-hander last pitched for the D-backs in 2022, before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He was one of the 26 non-roster invitees to camp and is healthy.

Not every D-backs player has reported to Salt River Fields, but Lovullo says everyone that has to be there is. He expects more position players to report over the next couple days. Full squad workouts begin Monday, February 19th.
