Insider shares big updates on Aaron Boone, Yankees offseason

It appears New York Yankees fans hoping team owner Hal Steinbrenner would make massive changes following the 2023 season will be disappointed. 

MLB insider Andy Martino of SNY has reported that manager Aaron Boone "is expected back with the Yankees next season" and will be part of Wednesday discussions held in Tampa that include "higher-ups" within the organization such as senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman.

Boone guided the Yankees to the playoffs each year from 2018 through 2022 and has a year left on his contract that includes a club option for 2025. Although the Bronx Bombers finished at 82-80 despite being responsible for the American League's most expensive squad, Boone received public votes of confidence during the campaign from noteworthy individuals such as captain Aaron Judge and other players. 

"That record was unacceptable to everyone involved, but the clubhouse and front office view Boone as part of the solution, not part of the problem," Martino said. 

Steinbrenner generated headlines when he told Mark Didtler of The Associated Press in late August he could use an outside company "to really take a look at the analytics side (and baseball operations) of what we do" this offseason. Martino offered an update regarding Steinbrenner's mindset on Tuesday. 

"There is no plan, and there never has been a plan, for the Yankees to invite anyone in to audit their organization, according to four people with direct knowledge of the team’s inner workings," Martino explained. He added that the Yankees "will be paying to view how an outside firm runs analytics, and then comparing it to the way they operate in that area." 

Judge said after the Yankees were eliminated from playoff contention on Sept. 24 that "we got a lot to work on, a lot of things to change and a lot of stuff going on around here that needs to be fixed." Moving on from Cashman and/or Boone won't be part of such changes, but Martino noted that "some tweaks to the coaching staff" could be made.
