Legendary Dodgers announcer Vin Scully dies at 94

Legendary MLB broadcaster Vin Scully has died at 94 years old, according to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"He was the voice of the Dodgers and so much more. He was their conscience, their poet laureate, capturing their beauty and chronicling their glory from Jackie Robinson to Sandy Koufax, Kirk Gibson to Clayton Kershaw," the Dodgers wrote.

"Vin Scully was the heartbeat of the Dodgers -- and in so many ways the heartbeat of Los Angeles."

Scully, born on November 29, 1927, called Dodgers games for 67 seasons, starting in 1950 when the franchise was located in Brooklyn, New York. Notably, he replaced Ernie Harwell as the voice of the Dodgers. Harwell, a fellow broadcasting icon, later went on to become the legendary voice of the Detroit Tigers.

Along with Jackie Robinson, Sandy Koufax, Kirk Gibson and Clayton Kershaw, Scully called games featuring greats like Dusty Baker, Hideo Nomo and Tommy John, among others.

"We have lost an icon," Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten said. "The Dodgers' Vin Scully was one of the greatest voices in all of sports. He was a giant of a man, not only as a broadcaster, but as a humanitarian."
