Luis Rengifo Expected to Be Ready for Spring Training
USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Angels' offseason can begin in earnest now that two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani has officially decided to leave the organization. Owner Arte Moreno had been waiting along with the rest of us to see where Ohtani would decide to go.

Now, Moreno and general manager Perry Minasian have some work to do in order to get their roster back to a level of contention. There are several roster holes to fill, but they also can also count on other players coming back from injuries.

Minasian updated the status of one returning player, infielder Luis Rengifo, for 2024. He said he expects Rengifo to be fully healthy next season.

"Minasian said infielder Luis Rengifo’s rehab from a torn biceps has been going well and he’s expected to be fully ready for spring training."

Rengifo was solid for the Halos in 2023, hitting .264 with 16 home runs and 51 runs batted in over 126 games played. They will be happy to get his bat back into the lineup and hope he can stay healthy throughout the year.

Following the trade of David Fletcher to the Atlanta Braves, Rengifo offers the necessary versatility – someone who can play all around the field, either as a starter or late-game substitute.

New manager Ron Washington should be excited to work with Rengifo this year. He specializes in helping infielders hone their craft.

Over the last two years, Rengifo has gotten the most at-bats of his career and delivered his most consistent seasons. His power (16 homers in 445 at-bats last year) could be particularly helpful in the wake of Ohtani's departure.

Rengifo will have a chance to be a solid contributor to this Angels team next season, and he has two more years left on his contract. If the team underperforms once again, they mighty look to deal him at the trade deadline for assets.
