New York Yankees Claim Former Toronto Blue Jays Top Prospect Off Waivers

After being designated for assignment recently by the Miami Marlins, infielder Jordan Groshans has been claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees.

Groshans was formerly one of the top prospects in all of baseball, coming up with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Per the Yankees on social media:

Earlier today, the Yankees claimed INF Jordan Groshans off waivers from the Miami Marlins. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated LHP Matt Krook for assignment.

He was in the Top 100 prospects (per MLB.com) in three straight years from 2020-2022, getting as high as No. 46 in 2021. Groshans is still just 24 years old, so there's certainly a chance of him finding himself as he moves forward, but it just hasn't happened yet. He's hit .262 in 61 career major league at-bats and hit just .244 at Triple-A last season, with only six home runs.

It doesn't seem likely that he'll be able to make an impact with the Yankees at the major league level in 2024, but you never know. New York has Anthony Volpe, DJ LeMahieu, Gleyber Torres, Anthony Rizzo, Oswald Peraza, and Jorbit Vivas as infielders on the 40-man roster.

The Yankees enter spring training with huge expectations. After finishing fourth in the American League East last season and missing the playoffs, New York went out and signed Marcus Stroman and traded for Juan Soto, Trent Grisham and Alex Verdugo.

They also expect to get top prospect Jasson Dominguez back from injury sometime around mid-summer.
