Philadelphia Phillies' J.T. Realmuto to Miss Second Straight Game With Hand Injury
USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto will not be in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Miami Marlins, the team revealed in their public lineup announcement.

Realmuto also missed Tuesday's game as a result of a hand injury. Garrett Stubbs will once again start in his place.

According to The Athletic's Matt Gelb, Realmuto suffered a "huge gash" in his throwing hand while sliding into second base against the Marlins on Monday. It is unknown when Realmuto will be able to return, although he has yet to land on the injured list.

Realmuto had previously played in 93 of Philadelphia's first 106 games this season. On the year, the 32-year-old catcher is hitting .243 with 12 home runs, 22 doubles, 12 stolen bases, 42 RBI and a .756 OPS. Realmuto ranks fifth on the team with a 2.3 WAR.

At $23.875 million, Realmuto is the highest-paid catcher in baseball. He inked a five-year, $115.5 million contract with the Phillies in 2021, two seasons after they picked him up in a trade with the Marlins.

Realmuto was a one-time All-Star and one-time Silver Slugger in his five years with Miami. The catcher has picked up two more All-Star appearances, two more Silver Sluggers, two Gold Gloves and a handful of NL MVP votes across his five years in Philadelphia.

For his career, Realmuto is a .273 hitter with 146 home runs, 229 doubles, 90 stolen bases, 557 RBI, a .785 OPS and a 32.0 WAR. The Kansas City Royals' Salvador Perez is the only active catcher with a higher career WAR than Realmuto, and that is with two more seasons under his belt.

First pitch between the Phillies and Marlins is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET. Philadelphia took games one and two on Monday and Wednesday, while the series finale will take place on Thursday.
