Report: Mets' 'primary target' for president of baseball operations is Brewers' David Stearns

The New York Mets appear to be honing in on one man for their president of baseball operations gig.

Per Tim Britton and Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic , the Mets "primary target" is Milwaukee Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns.

"The Mets are operating with the belief that Stearns’ contract will expire after the 2022 season, and that he would have interest in the job," the article read. "The Brewers have declined multiple times to let the Mets interview Stearns, who grew up in Manhattan as a Mets fan."

Britton and Ghiroli noted that the Mets may be looking to hire a "one-year placeholder" as general manager before Stearns could join the organization after the 2022 campaign. It was reported earlier this week that former Washington Nationals assistant GM Adam Cromie was "in the mix" to be named the Mets' next GM.

The Mets are looking to fill their general manager position after acting GM Zack Scott was fired last week, two months after being charged with DWI. Scott was named acting GM in January after Jared Porter was fired following an ESPN report that the former GM sent explicit text messages to a female reporter while with the Chicago Cubs in 2016.
