Scott Boras compares Mets owner Steve Cohen to Goliath, King Kong

Big-name agent Scott Boras has once again offered high praise for New York Mets owner Steve Cohen.

"Our game needs Goliaths," Boras said of Cohen during Thursday's media event related to the Mets re-signing outfielder Brandon Nimmo, per Greg Joyce of the New York Post. "We have to have Goliaths. You can envision Steve Cohen hanging on to the Empire State Building. There he is. And it’s maybe not Steve Cohen, it’s Steve Kong. But when you’re there and you’re looking at it, how good is it for the game? It’s really good for the game."

Boras represents Nimmo and helped the 29-year-old land an eight-year, $162 million contract to return to the Mets. Along with that deal, the Amazins have spent boatloads of cash to hold onto closer Edwin Diaz, sign three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander to replace Jacob deGrom, acquire Japanese ace Kodai Senga, and add depth pieces David Robertson and Jose Quintana.

According to Joyce, the Mets have spent $461.7 million this offseason and probably aren't done yet. New York won 101 regular-season games in 2022 but nevertheless failed to claim the National League East division crown and subsequently fell to the San Diego Padres in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Cohen signed shortstop Francisco Lindor to a 10-year extension that could be worth up to $341 million ahead of the 2021 season, and the Mets then acquired ace Max Scherzer via a three-year, $130 million contract last fall. In November, Boras noted that Cohen closing the deal with Scherzer "raised the flag that 'we're here to be a championship-level organization.'"
