Shaquille O'Neal to entertain Phillies fans with postgame concert

Fans sticking around after Saturday’s Phillies game will be entertained by an NBA legend. He goes by the name DJ Diesel, but most know him as Shaquille O’Neal.

Following the Phillies-Nationals game on July 1, Diesel will perform an on-field, post-game concert at Citizens Bank Park. The show will be part of an ongoing concert series that featured indie pop band AJR earlier in June and acts like the Avett Brothers and Jake Owens in 2022.

But Shaquille O’Neal? Let’s be honest, dubstep DJs aren’t typically Hall of Fame athletes, and they’re usually not 7-foot-1 and over 300 pounds. Regardless of how it looks or what other people think, O’Neal relishes the opportunity to perform live onstage.

“It’s like being in a basketball game and having people come and cheer you on and support you,” O’Neal told The Hollywood Reporter. “I just want everybody to have a good time.”

Over the years, fans of EDM (electronic dance music) have had a great time at Citizens Bank Park. In 2013, the first Phillies postgame concert featured Dutch Duo W&W. In 2014, the team hosted German DJ Markus Schulz for another EDM performance that was also covered by MTV.

In 2018, German DJ Zedd held a postgame concert and in 2019 the team welcomed Diplo following a game against the Cubs that featured a game-winning, ninth-inning grand slam by Bryce Harper.

After 20 years in the NBA and four championships, O’Neal doesn’t need to spend his nights working as a DJ. But he obviously enjoys it, just like Philly fans enjoy the post-game concerts. Temperatures for the event should be in the 70s and with thousands visiting the city for the Fourth of July weekend, the event should be very popular.
