Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s homer carries Jays over White Sox
Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

Whit Merrifield drove in two runs and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. smacked a go-ahead, two-run home run in the eighth inning to lift the visiting Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-3 win against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

Toronto stopped a three-game skid despite being out-hit 7-6. Just two of the team's hits went for extra bases, but Guerrero made the second of those count, connecting against Chicago reliever Joe Kelly.

Erik Swanson worked around Tim Anderson's triple in a scoreless eighth to improve to 5-1. Jordan Romano struck out the side in a perfect ninth to notch his 25th save in 28 chances.

White Sox starter Lucas Giolito faced one batter over the minimum through the first three innings before encountering struggles in the fourth.

He bookended two walks around a single as the Blue Jays loaded the bases with one out. A strikeout of Daulton Varsho put the White Sox within one out of escaping the jam, but Merrifield delivered one batter later, lining a two-run double to left field on the first pitch.

Chicago responded in the sixth inning. Consecutive singles set the stage for Luis Robert Jr., who cracked a three-run home run against Toronto's Chris Bassitt; Robert sent the ball an estimated 450 feet into the left-field bleachers.

It was the 25th home run for Robert, which ranks second in the American League.

Toronto improved to 4-0 against Chicago while clinching the season series.

Anderson and Eloy Jimenez each had two hits for Chicago. Kelly (1-4) allowed two runs on one hit and a walk, with two strikeouts, in his one inning.

Giolito spaced two runs and four hits in six innings, with two walks and four strikeouts. Bassitt also had a no-decision despite contributing a quality start, allowing three runs and six hits in six innings, with one walk and five strikeouts.

Blue Jays right fielder George Springer remained in the game after a foul ball caromed off the protective netting and hit him in the jaw.
