White Sox Option Lenyn Sosa to Minors: Braden Shewmake, Danny Mendick Compete for Roster Spot

The Chicago White Sox announced another roster move on Wednesday. Lenyn Sosa will begin the 2023 season with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights, where he has spent most of the past two seasons. Sosa  appeared in 52 games with the White Sox last year but performed poorly.

The infielder appeared to be the odd man out in the White Sox' Spring Training battle for their Opening Day roster. The South Siders' starting infield is set in stone with Yoan Moncada, Andrew Vaughn, Nicky Lopez, and Paul DeJong. The former international signee contended with Danny Mendick, a non-roster invitee, and Braden Shewmake for a bench spot.

Odd Man Out

However, Sosa had fallen out of favor with Pedro Grifol and the coaching staff. In Tuesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds, the 24-year-old took an at-bat for the first time in 10 days. Despite Sosa hitting a home run in that plate appearance, Chicago chose a different path for its backup infielder. Sosa provided little base running ability and failed to take advantage of his power due to an inability to make consistent contact.

The White Sox will now look upon Braden Shewmake and Danny Mendick to finalize their 26-man roster. Mendick played well for Chicago in 2022 before landing with the New York Mets the following season. The 30-year-old has just four hits in 24 at-bats this spring.

F.A.S.T

Shewmake, acquired from the Atlanta Braves in the Aaron Bummer trade, is the likely front-runner in this battle. He provides left-handed hitting with a .726 OPS against right-handed pitchers in 2023, good speed, and solid defense up the middle. Shewmake's status as a member of the White Sox 40-man roster gives him a leg up over Mendick.

A spot on the 26-man roster appears to be Shewmake's to lose after he's received an extended look in Cactus League play. He best fits the player profile of the F.A.S.T style of play manager Pedro Grifol desires. Although his plate production needs improvement, his speed and ability to play multiple infield positions well should punch his ticket to Chicago.
