Will Smith makes history with third straight World Series
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Before the World Series, I wrote an article telling all 30 teams exactly what they need to do if they want to hold up the Commissioner’s Trophy next October. Sign Will Smith.

The former Brave won his first World Series in 2021 as the team’s closer, where he was flawless in the ninth inning despite a tumultuous career in Atlanta. The following year, he was traded to the Astros at the trade deadline for starting pitching depth. The Braves would go on to get bounced NLDS, while Houston would go on to avenge their World Series defeat, beating the Phillies in six games.

Last offseason, Will Smith signed a one-year deal with the Rangers. He may have only appeared four times in the playoffs, surrendering four runs over 3.1 innings, but last night, Texas clinched their first World Series in franchise history, making Smith the first player in MLB history to win three straight World Series with three different teams.

Will Smith was once one of the more dominant relievers in all of baseball. His roles have severely diminished from when he was closing games for the Braves, but if I’m a team trying to get back in the winner’s circle, I’m taking a good long look at Smith, who is set to become a free agent for the second consecutive year.

Your move, Alex Anthopoulos.
