Fred VanVleet had strong words after joining Rockets

Fred VanVleet was the Houston Rockets marquee signing during the offseason. The veteran guard brings two-way play and veteran leadership. Houston's young roster has already begun benefitting from the guard's presence.

According to a source who spoke with Heavy on Sports' Steve Bulpett, VanVleet laid down the law upon joining his new team.

“Man, all this s*** that’s been going on around here, that’s all gonna change. I’m makin’ sure of that," VanVleet reportedly told members of the locker room.

Houston defeated the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night. The Rockets are 4-3 on the season, and VanVleet has been a driving force for his new teammates. As a veteran, he will be tasked with holding the team's younger players accountable. During his tenure with the Toronto Raptors, VanVleet proved himself to be a fierce competitor.

Ime Udoka has also been a factor in the Rockets' recent change in fortunes. He's added discipline and attention to detail. Houston's decision to bring in VanVleet and Dillon Brooks this summer is already paying dividends. Still, VanVleet's decision to instantly snatch some authority upon signing was risky.

Young teams tend to be combustible. New faces walking in and laying down the law has the potential to backfire. Yet, after multiple years of losing, it would appear Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun are ready to learn from seasoned professionals.

VanVleet isn't a star talent. He's a one-time All-Star with a championship ring. He's a role player who figured out how to excel within the confines of his role. If there's one thing he can teach his new teammates, it's how to flourish while being a team player. Houston has their stars of the future and multiple players capable of becoming high-level rotation options. Learning how to work as a unit is why VanVleet was acquired.

So far, the new locker room leadership structure appears to be working.
