Heat To Sign Veteran Guard After Wizards Contract Buyout

Delon Wright agreed with the Washington Wizards for a contract buyout, paving the path for him to join the Miami Heat after he clears waivers and becomes an NBA free agent, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

At 31 years old, Wright experienced a reduction in playing time with the Wizards this season, as the team, which is in a rebuilding phase, opted to focus on developing other talent.

Consequently, Wright’s average of 13.8 minutes per game this season marks his lowest since his debut year in the league.

Despite the decrease in minutes, Wright is coming off an impressive 2022-23 season, where he contributed 7.4 points and 3.9 assists per game, along with a field goal percentage of 47.4% and a 34.5 percent from the perimeter, over an average of 24.4 minutes per game.

Standing at 6-foot-5, Wright is known for his versatile skills as a combo guard, offering reliable shooting, playmaking abilities, and defensive prowess.

His addition is expected to bolster the Miami Heat’s backcourt, especially in light of the injury to Terry Rozier, a recently acquired guard who suffered a sprained knee. Josh Richardson continues to recover from a dislocated right shoulder.

Wright was in the final year of his contract and is poised to become a free agent this coming summer. He will aim to help the Heat after drawing interest from various playoff teams interested in his services.
