Mavericks To Waive-And-Stretch JaVale McGee, Re-Sign Markieff Morris
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Mavericks are planning to waive-and-stretch JaVale McGee and re-sign Markieff Morris, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.

McGee appeared in 42 games for the Mavericks last season. He averaged 4.4 points and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 64.0% from the field and 58.5% from the free-throw line. The three-time NBA champion signed a three-year, $17.2 million contract with the Mavericks last summer.

McGee has career NBA averages of 7.8 points and 5.2 assists in 863 games with the Washington Wizards, Denver Nuggets, Philadelphia 76ers, Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Suns.

Dallas acquired Morris from the Brooklyn Nets last season in the blockbuster Kyrie Irving trade. The NBA veteran averaged 4.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in eight games with the Mavericks. Morris has career averages of 10.6 points and 5.0 rebounds in 750 games with the Suns, Wizards, Oklahoma City Thunder, Detroit Pistons, Lakers, Miami Heat, Nets and Mavericks.

The Mavericks went 38-44 last season. They missed the playoffs despite having Luka Doncic and Irving. The team needs more shooters around Doncic and Irving, which is why the front office has been trying to acquire Bojan Bogdanovic from the Pistons all summer, league sources told NBA Analysis Network.

Dallas was only 5-11 in games Doncic and Irving played together last season. That was the worst winning percentage (.313) for a pair of teammates who were both All-Stars since the ABA-NBA merger in 1976-77, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

The Mavericks have been busy this summer. They re-signed Irving and Dwight Powell, signed Seth Curry, Derrick Jones Jr. and Dante Exum and acquired Grant Williams from the Boston Celtics and Richaun Holmes from the Sacramento Kings.
