Having already traded away Jeff Teague, along with the potential departures of Al Horford and Kent Bazemore looming, the Hawks must make a decision whether to rebuild in Atlanta or reload the roster. Paul Millsap can still play at an All-Star level, but there are glaring holes all over the depth chart now. If Atlanta does in fact lose Horford and Bazemore in free agency, it will likely be time to reconstruct the roster.
After failing to acquire Jimmy Butler during the draft, the Boston Celtics now have a plethora of young, talented players. Unfortunately for head coach Brad Stevens, he can only play five players at a time. Along with having a ton of cap space, expect Celtics GM Danny Ainge to do everything he can to make a deal for a superstar this offseason.
Not much has gone right since the Nets moved to Brooklyn a few years ago. After haphazardly trading away multiple draft picks and being well over the cap for years, the Nets finally are in a position to rebuild their team. One name to watch for that has been strongly connected to Brooklyn in free agency in Rajon Rondo. The former All-Star will in all likelihood leave Sacramento, and bringing in a point guard of his acumen would finally give Nets fans something to cheer for.
After an admirable first-round showing against the Miami Heat, the Charlotte Hornets showed themselves to be a rising force in the East. Unfortunately for head coach Steve Clifford, key players Nicolas Batum, Al Jefferson, Jeremy Lin, Courtney Lee and Marvin Williams are all unrestricted free agents. Hornets management will need to find a way to retain Batum and Lin in particular if Charlotte wants to continue to be a rising team.
Having already traded former MVP Derrick Rose, it appears there is a changing of the guard in Chicago. Rumors were swirling draft night that star shooting guard Jimmy Butler could also be had for the right price. Although Butler wasn’t traded, there is still a solid chance Bulls management would deal him away this offseason if the team is offered the right package of young players and future draft picks.
Although head coach Tyronn Lue has publicly stated Kevin Love will not be traded, let’s keep it real: There’s a significant chance Kevin Love will be traded. The former All-Star has never looked like himself in Cleveland, and although he played well in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, his performance overall in the playoffs was far from spectacular. Expect to begin to hear some whispers regarding Love’s future during the month of July.
Every offseason, the Dallas Mavericks make the impression they will be major free agent players, but they never manage to acquire a superstar. Mavs fans hope this offseason will be different. With loads of cap space to play with, expect Mark Cuban and company to do everything they possibly can to re-sign Dirk Nowitzki and also chase high-profile free agents like DeMar DeRozan, Al Horford, Mike Conley and Hassan Whiteside.
Having drafted Jamal Murray and Malik Beasley, the Denver Nuggets all of a sudden have a logjam of players along the wing. Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and Kenneth Faried are all veteran players the Nuggets could trade to contenders for valuable pieces to help them along in their rebuild.
Pistons center Andre Drummond had a breakout campaign this past season. The 22-year-old led the NBA in double-doubles and rebounds per game. As a restricted free agent, Drummond can sign an offer sheet with another franchise, but fortunately for Pistons fans, Detroit can match any offer Drummond receives and keep him in Motown. Regardless, you can be assured Drummond will sign a max contract this summer.
After their stunning NBA Finals loss, it appears the Golden State Warriors are on a mission for redemption. Their plan to make that happen seems to be to sign Kevin Durant. If the Warriors are in fact able to lure Durant to the Bay Area, it would be the biggest free agent coup since LeBron James initially left Cleveland in 2010 for Miami. Oh, and it would make a Warriors team that already features three of the best 15 players in the league (in Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson) seemingly unbeatable.
The 2015-16 NBA season was a disastrous one for the Houston Rockets. With Dwight Howard and others expected to leave in free agency, Rockets GM Daryl Morey has his work cut out for him when it comes to retooling his roster. Obviously, the team will be built around James Harden, but outside of “The Beard” it’s difficult to imagine at this point what Houston’s starting lineup will look like next season.
With Paul George, Myles Turner and the recently acquired Jeff Teague, the Indiana Pacers all of a sudden have a roster that looks like it could contend in the East. However, the Pacers also have a new head coach in Nate McMillan. McMillan has had success as coach previously with the Trail Blazers, but he was never able to get Portland over the hump. For a team that is on the cusp of doing just that, the McMillan hire is a curious one.
Every single NBA fan is keenly aware of just how awesome Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan are. Yet for a multitude of reasons, the Clippers' big three have failed to advance past the second round of the playoffs during their time playing together. Head coach and president of basketball operations Doc Rivers has had mixed results constructing the L.A. roster, but with Paul nearing the end of his prime, this could prove to be most important offseason in franchise history. Finally with some cap space to work with, the question becomes can Doc Rivers finally surround his star trio with the right teammates?
With Kobe Bryant retired, the Lakers are finally in a position to truly rebuild their team. They have a slew of talented young players in Brandon Ingram, D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson and Julius Randle, but a bigger question looms over this historic franchise: Are the Lakers the free agent destination they once were? The answer is probably not, but that doesn’t mean they're unable to still lure quality players into a purple and gold jersey. With the pressure mounting on team president Jim Buss, expect Lakers management to make some sort of splash in free agency. The Lakers will push hard to sign players like Hassan Whiteside, Al Horford and DeMar DeRozan.
For the past several years, Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley has been one of most underappreciated floor generals. Unfortunately for Memphis, Conley is now an unrestricted free agent, and if the Grizz are unable to re-sign their star point guard, it would be a major setback.
In 2010, Miami Heat team president Pat Riley was able to bring the greatest player of this generation in LeBron James to South Beach. Flash-forward to 2016, and Riley has secured a meeting with another future Hall of Fame player, Kevin Durant. The Heat is considered to be an outside contender to land Durant, but when a player sits down a speaks with Pat Riley one on one anything can happen.
The Milwaukee Bucks failed miserably to live up to expectations in the 2015-16 season, and part of the reason why was that prized free agent signing Greg Monroe just never seemed to gel with the team. Considering the Bucks are a little bit further away from being a contender than most thought, moving the veteran big man is a strong possibility. Rumors of such a move have been making the rounds for quite some time.
The future in Minnesota is bright. REALLY BRIGHT. The Timberwolves boast the talents of Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn, and now have one of the most respected head coaches in the NBA with Tom Thibodeau. That being said, the presence of LaVine and Dunn makes veteran point guard Ricky Rubio expendable. The fifth overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, Rubio appears to have peaked in Minnesota, and a change of scenery could do him wonders.
Adding Buddy Hield in the draft was a good start, but does Anthony Davis ever need some support in New Orleans. Theoretically, that help is there with Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans, but both players have trouble staying healthy and on the court. With some cap space to work with, Pelicans GM Dell Demps needs to find some fresh faces in free agency or the trade market if he wants to see his team excel with AD leading the way.
Although there have been reports that the acquisition of Derrick Rose was done in an attempt to sway Kevin Durant’s favor, it’s hard to understand what exactly Knicks team president Phil Jackson is trying to accomplish in New York. The Knicks have a rising star in Kristaps Porzingis but appear to be caught in between being a contender and a team on the rebuild. In other words, the Knicks are in basketball purgatory and don’t appear to have an exit plan.
Putting aside the Serge Ibaka trade, this offseason is about one thing of the Oklahoma City Thunder: re-signing Kevin Durant. If OKC retains its star, the Thunder will remain a title contender. If not, Thunder fans could be saying goodbye to Russell Westbrook a year from now as well.
After making a fantastic decision in hiring Frank Vogel to be the new head coach, the Orlando Magic should become playoff contenders in the East once again next season. However, there is also a desire in Orlando to bring in a high-profile free agent along the wing with the departure of Victor Oladipo, and the Magic will likely be willing to overpay to do so. Chandler Parsons or Harrison Barnes would appear to be prime targets for the Orlando front office.
After years of utter misery, 76ers fans can finally be optimistic about their team's future. But the arrival of Ben Simmons shouldn't overshadow the fact Philly has major logjam of frontcourt players. Jahlil Okafor, Nerlens Noel and Joel Embiid all essentially play the same position on the floor, and having all three on the roster just doesn’t make any sense. The Sixers attempted to trade both Okafor and Noel during the draft and should continue to explore trades for the big men this offseason.
After trading away two quality point guards in Isaiah Thomas and Goran Dragic, the Suns may be ready to ship out another this summer in either Brandon Knight or Eric Bledsoe. The Suns could look for a package of either Knight or Bledsoe along with one of their lottery picks in Dragan Bender or Marquese Chriss to acquire an All-Star level player. Kevin Love, anyone?
The Portland Trail Blazers, led by Damian Lillard, exceeded all expectations last season, not only making the playoffs, but also winning their first-round matchup with the Clippers. The Blazers' backcourt is set with Lillard and C.J. McCollum, but there is room to improve everywhere else on the roster. Expect Portland to sign a quality frontcourt player in free agency.
It’s no secret at this point that the Sacramento Kings' dysfunctional front office has alienated the team's best player in DeMarcus Cousins. Although the team appears keen to hold on to “Boogie” into the next season, there is no question the All-Star is reaching his breaking point in Sacramento. Don’t be shocked if Cousins demands a trade sooner than later.
With Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldrige taking center stage in San Antonio, living Spurs legend Tim Duncan often found himself riding the bench this past postseason. Duncan, 40, did pick up his player option for next season, so it appears he'll play at least one more year, but how effective can he be in his fourth decade on earth? Regardless, Duncan has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest power forwards in NBA history and perhaps one of the NBA’s 10 best players ever.
The 2015-16 NBA season was the most successful campaign in Toronto Raptors history. Having made it all the way to Eastern Conference Finals, the Raptors will need to re-sign All-Star shooting guard DeMar DeRozan if they wish to maintain such a level of success. DeRozan has publicly stated he wants to stay in Toronto, but there is a strong sentiment for him to return to his hometown of Los Angeles with either the Lakers or Clippers.
Although he’s not being actively shopped, there has been some speculation that the Jazz could deal Gordon Hayward. With the roster for next season essentially set already, keep an eye out for Hayward’s name on the trade market.
Having already been axed by Kevin Durant, the Washington Wizards will look elsewhere in free agency to find new starting small forward. Unfortunately for the Wizards, outside of Durant, there aren’t too many great players available at the three spot to be had. Chandler Parsons, Harrison Barnes and Nicolas Batum could all be options though.
