10 best plays from 2019 NFL season so far

The NFL is so full of highlight reel plays every week that it would be difficult to rank the best 10 plays from one week let alone half a season.

But this list spans the first eight weeks of the 2019 season. The first half of the 100th NFL season saw a little bit of everything and a lot of tremendous highlights from the top-tiered quarterbacks.

Here are the best 10 plays of the 2019 season through Week 8.

10. Julio Jones' touchdown to beat Eagles in Week 2

It's been a terrible first half for the Atlanta Falcons, but the team's one shining moment made our list. The Eagles reclaimed the lead late in the fourth quarter of their Week 2 battle in Atlanta, but just before the two-minute warning, Matt Ryan and Julio Jones connected for a 54-yard touchdown.

Offensive tackle Jake Matthews made a tremendous block in the open field on the game-winning score. Mohamed Sanu also helped spring Jones free, and the All-Pro receiver's speed did the rest.

9. Cordarrelle Patterson kickoff return touchdown against Saints in Week 7

It's been tough sledding for the Chicago Bears offense this season, but the special teams have been just fine. In the first half against the Saints, Cordarrelle Patterson scored the Bears' first touchdown of the day on a sweet kickoff return.

Patterson broke one tackle and used his speed the rest of the way to the end zone. He has seven kickoff return touchdowns in his career.

8. Malik Hooker interception vs. Chargers in Week 3

Watching this interception live doesn't do it justice. On the replay, fans can see Malik Hooker come out of seemingly nowhere to record a one-handed interception and rob Keenan Allen of a touchdown.

This was a key play in the game, as it allowed the Colts to stay within eight points midway through the fourth quarter. Indianapolis tied the game with a touchdown and two-point conversion inside of two minutes to play to force overtime.

7. Marcus Peters' pick-six against Seahawks in Week 7

It didn't take long for Marcus Peters to make a huge impact with his new team, the Baltimore Ravens. Russell Wilson doesn't make many mistakes, but his attempt to throw back across the field was a major one, and Peters made him pay with a 67-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Since coming into the league in 2015, Peters leads the NFL with 25 interceptions.

6. Vernon Davis hurdles Eagles defenders in Week 1

The league-wide fad of hurdling defenders is one of the worst ideas an offensive weapon can make, but when it works, it does look really cool.

The 35-year-old tight end Davis seemingly hurdled the entire Eagles defense, breaking multiple tackles, on this play to the end zone in Week 1. It's Davis' only touchdown this season.

5. Aaron Rodgers somehow finds Jamaal Williams for touchdown against Chiefs in Week 8

This list could just be a compilation of Rodgers plays. He may have thrown for five touchdown passes the prior week, but Rodgers' most unbelievable play of the season came on Sunday night against the Chiefs.

On a throw that looked like he was tossing away to the sidelines, Rodgers somehow found Jamaal Williams in the corner of the end zone with a defender right in his face.

4. Deshaun Watson fixes face mask on touchdown pass against Raiders in Week 4

Direct hits to the eye can't slow down Watson either.

The Texans quarterback spun out of a sack and then found tight end Darren Fells for a touchdown, which proved to be the game-winning score. After the play, fans discovered a Raiders defender kicked Watson in the face, and on the replay, one can see that he actually has to adjust his helmet briefly before hitting Fells with the touchdown pass.

3. Russell Wilson connects with Tyler Lockett for insane touchdown against Rams in Week 5

This play was a team effort, as Wilson did a terrific job of buying additional time. Then when he found Lockett in the end zone, Wilson placed the ball where no one else could make a play on it besides his receiver.

That doesn't mean it was an easy catch. Lockett's reception on the play may end the year as the best catch of the season.

2. Patrick Mahomes' touchdown pass against Colts in Week 5

The 2018 NFL MVP does something special every week, but this play was one for the all-time highlight reel.

Mahomes probably should have suffered a big-loss on a sack, but he continued to elude defenders and roll to his right until he found an open Byron Pringle in the end zone for a 27-yard touchdown.

Mahomes threw an absolute dart to Pringle slightly across his body while on the run. Just simply amazing.

1. Nick Bosa interception vs. Panthers in Week 8

Maybe ranking this play as No. 1 overall through eight weeks is an example of recency bias. The four touchdown passes from Mahomes, Wilson, Watson and Rodgers were just tremendous, and Bosa doesn't even score on this play.

But with those quarterback plays working against each other, Bosa takes the top spot on our list. Very few defensive linemen could make this interception, and the rookie nearly returns the pick to the goal line.

This play will get Bosa not only into the Rookie Defensive Player of the Year discussion but also into the overall Defensive Player of the Year debate. The only player to win that award as a rookie is Lawrence Taylor.
