49ers' John Lynch pledges support for Richard Sherman, wife

The NFL community continues to react with shock and concern following the arrest of free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman at his wife's parents' home near Seattle early Wednesday morning.

Sherman spent the last three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, and 49ers general manager John Lynch said Thursday he's reached out to both Sherman and his wife, Ashley.

"Obviously, (it's) not the news you want to hear," Lynch told reporters about Sherman's situation, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. "Surprised, certainly, but most of all, just concern for the family, for everyone involved."

Lynch added: "More than anything, just praying for them. They’re good people. Just praying that they find their way through this, and we’ll support them any way we can."

According to reports, Sherman was allegedly intoxicated when he crashed a vehicle into a cement freeway barrier and then attempted to break into his in-laws' residence. Authorities said he later got into an altercation with police outside of that home, and that officers used a K9 unit to apprehend the three-time First-Team All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection.

Per an ESPN piece, a woman who identified herself as Sherman's wife called 911 Wednesday morning and claimed the cornerback was "drunk and belligerent" and "threatening to kill himself." Sherman was scheduled to appear before a judge at 5:30 pm ET/2:30 pm PT Thursday.
