Blaine Gabbert goes from backing up one GOAT to another

Blaine Gabbert spent the last three seasons backing up the "GOAT" Tom Brady with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, the 33-year-old is joining the Kansas City Chiefs to serve as the understudy to perhaps the next "GOAT" in Patrick Mahomes.

The news of Gabbert signing with the Chiefs was first reported on Tuesday afternoon by "The Pat McAfee Show." Multiple reports have said that Gabbert's deal is for one year.

The 2011 draft pick played just one game for the Bucs during the 2022 campaign, going six-for-eight for 29 passing yards and one touchdown. Gabbert was sparingly used as Brady's backup, appearing in 11 games over the three seasons (zero starts) and going 22-for-35 with 239 passing yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Gabbert will replace his former Jacksonville Jaguars teammate Chad Henne as Mahomes' second in command. After four years with the Miami Dolphins to begin his NFL career, Henne played for the Jaguars from 2012-17 and then joined Kansas City ahead of the 2018 season.

The 37-year-old played only 11 games, making one start, over the past five seasons behind Mahomes and went 41-for-59 for 359 passing yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Henne retired hours after earning a Super Bowl LVII ring with the Chiefs in February.
