Denver Broncos legend completely done with football: ‘I don’t have desire to climb another mountain’

Denver Broncos icon John Elway has had a legendary career in the game of football, but at 62 the team legend is finally ready to walk away from the sport for good.

Without a doubt, John Elway is the greatest quarterback in the history of the Denver Broncos. The former Stanford star leads the franchise in yards, touchdowns, and game-winning drives, fourth-quarter comebacks, and wins by a massive amount. However, while he brought the team to prominence, he also stamped their place in league history by taking them to a pair of Super Bowl wins as a player in 1997 and 1998.

But that is not where Elway’s legacy ends with the Denver Broncos. In 2011, he became the organization’s general manager and vice president. Again, leading them to the promised land and a third Super Bowl title in 2015. Yet, that legendary run with the organization that spanned the majority of the last three decades officially came to an end last month when his most recent consultant contract with the franchise ran out.

With a new ownership group leading the Denver Broncos, Elway’s time with the team seems to be at an end, and it looks like that was enough of a clear sign for the Hall-of-Famer to bring a complete end to his career in professional football. On Saturday, Elway told The Denver Gazette that he is officially done with the NFL and football as the focus of his life.

“I don’t have that desire to climb another mountain again. I’ve been to the summit a bunch of times in 62 years,” Elway said.

The soon to be 63 year old will now shift his focus to his various businesses, and start checking off several opportunities and destinations off his retirement life bucket list.

“I’ve got the restaurants and car dealerships and other [enterprises] to keep me busy enough. I want to play golf. The No. 1 trip on my bucket list is to Normandy [the landing area of the Allies’ invasion in World War II], I’ve always wanted to go there. [His wife] Paige and I want to take a boat trip to the Greek Isles, and I’ll spend a lot of my time with my grandkids.”

John Elway spent 28 of the last 40 years working for the Denver Broncos organization and will go down as one of its greatest players and executives ever.
