Ex-Green Bay WR spills on ‘the gospel of Aaron Rodgers’
Wide receiver Randall Cobb Chris Pedota, NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK

It goes without saying that Aaron Rodgers is the New York Jets’ biggest recruit this summer. However, he’s not the only ex-Green Bay Packers player who made the move to the Big Apple during the offseason. Former Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb also recently transferred to New York and at this point, it is clear that he’s been tasked with more than just being an Aaron Rodgers target now that he’s with the Jets.

Randall Cobb explains what ‘The Gospel of Aaron Rodgers’ is

Cobb is now entering his 13th season in the NFL. He’s suited up for the Packers in 10 out of his 12 years in the league. Throughout his stay in Green Bay, he had the privilege of playing alongside Aaron Rodgers. It’s safe to say that the veteran wide receiver knows a thing or two about the four-time league MVP.

In a recent interview, Cobb spilled on his relationship with Rodgers on the field. He joked: “So, you want the gospel of Aaron Rodgers?’’

“We had the opportunity to play with him for a long time,” Cobb said after practice on Monday, via via Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post. “We know what to expect, what he’s looking for. Playing with great quarterbacks, they are very particular with the way they do things and go about it and how to get to certain calls, how to pass on that knowledge.”

By “we,” Cobb was referring to his fellow ex-Packer teammates Allen Lazard, QB Tim Boyle, and T Billy Turner, all of whom are now with the Jets. Cobb, of all people, knows exactly what to expect from Rodgers now that they’re both entering Year 1 in New York:

“Football IQ is a huge thing [for Rodgers], not just running plays on paper,” Cobb said. “Things come to life. For a receiver, it’s important getting open at the right time whatever the play call may be, whether you’re the first read or the last. It’s about understanding where you fit in is a huge piece. If you get open, but he’s not looking at you it’s because you’re last on the progression. It’s more than just the play call, you have to understand where you fit into the big picture.”

This is obviously some vital information that the Jets will want to capitalize on. Cobb, along with his other former Packers teammates, are now expected to pass on this knowledge to their new Jets teammates as they look to find as much success with Aaron Rodgers at center.

The World does not revolve around Aaron Rodgers

Even Randall Cobb knows, however, that the world does not revolve around Rodgers. It may feel this way sometimes, but the truth is, the 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback is just one (very important) player on a team that is looking to make a lot of noise in the NFL this season:

“I’m very excited, I think we have the making of a very good team,” Cobb said. “It’s about building it together. It’s not about Aaron Rodgers. It’s about the New York Jets and about collectively playing at a high level and finding a way for us to win games.”

While this may be true, the fact of the matter is that more than a few storylines in New York are surely going to revolve around Aaron Rodgers this season.
