Field Yates predicts when AD Mitchell will get drafted, potential landing spots
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Texas receiver AD Mitchell had a breakout season in 2023. The Georgia transfer caught 55 passes for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, leading the Longhorns in touchdown receptions and yards per catch.

AD Mitchell also ran a 4.34 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, finishing with the sixth-best mark of all combine participants.

NFL Draft analyst Field Yates said recently during a conference call that he expects Mitchell to be drafted in the first round.

“I think AD Mitchell has played himself into a borderline top-25 lock for the draft,” Yates said.

Yates also discussed some potential landing spots for Mitchell. He believes that a couple of teams in particular make sense.

“Jacksonville could have a gap in their offense. Indianapolis is going to keep Michael Pittman Jr. … but they need some extra help there at the wide receiver spot,” Yates said. “More speed would help when you have a quarterback in Anthony Richardson who might have the strongest arm in the league. Certainly on that very short list.”

The Jaguars hold the No. 17 pick in the upcoming NFL draft, while the Colts have the No. 15 overall pick. Those would certainly be strong landing spots for the Tennessee native.

AD Mitchell signed with Georgia as a four-star recruit and the No. 302 overall player in the country in the class of 2021, according to the On3 Industry rankings.

As a freshman in 2021, Mitchell caught 29 passes for 426 yards and four touchdowns. He caught a touchdown pass in each of Georgia’s win in the College Football Playoff that season, including the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter of the national championship game.

In 2022, Mitchell missed nine games due to injuries but still played in six, with three starts. He had nine catches for 134 yards and three touchdowns in 2022, once again catching a touchdown pass in both of Georgia’s College Football Playoff games.

This past season, Mitchell helped Texas to the College Football Playoff after joining the Longhorns program during the offseason. He was named the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year and was a second-team All-Big 12 selection.

Mitchell led the Big 12 in receiving touchdowns as the Longhorns finished the season with a 12-2 record, falling to Oklahoma during the regular season and coming up just short against Washington in the College Football Playoff. Now Mitchell is off to the NFL, where his speed is sure to be attractive for several teams in the NFL draft.
