Former First-Round Tackle Lands on Jets' Practice Squad

The New York Jets swapped out one offensive tackle for another on the 16-man Practice Squad Thursday.

The team announced the return of former roster member Cedric Ogbuehi, signing the 31-year-old reserve tackle to a PS deal while releasing rookie Ryan Swoboda.

Ogbuehi, who made seven appearances (five starts) for the Jets in 2022, re-signed for a second year with Gang Green in April before being released in May. Swoboda inked an undrafted free-agent contract with the Detroit Lions but did not survive the final roster cutdown. The 6-foot-8 Swoboda, who was the tallest player in the 2023 NFL Draft pool, joined the Jets on August 31.

After spending his first four NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, who made him the No. 21 overall pick in 2015, Ogbuehi passed through four different organizations before arriving in New York. The 6-foot-5 bookend has recorded 65 regular season appearances over the years with 25 of his 35 career starts coming with the Bengals prior to 2018.

Swoboda, a developmental prospect, played four years for Virginia before closing out his collegiate career at Central Florida. He gained notoriety amongst the scouting community while competing alongside Jets' rookie receivers Jason Brownlee and Xavier Gipson at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in Pasadena.

The Jets are carrying four offensive tackles on their current 53-man roster with 38-year-old Duane Brown and 2020 first-round draft pick Mekhi Becton starting on the left and right sides, respectively. Veteran Billy Turner and second-year pro Max Mitchell are the listed backups. Mitchell has been a gameday inactive for the season's first two weeks.

Ogbuehi and guard Adam Pankey are the lone offensive linemen currently assigned to the Green & White's Practice Squad.

The offensive tackle addition was the Jets' second change to the Practice Squad this week. On Wednesday, the team re-added receiver Irvin Charles into the mix while parting ways with defensive tackle Tanzel Smart of "Hard Knocks" fame.
