Giants' Tommy DeVito, Jets' Zach Wilson improbably win awards weeks after ugly matchup

In a season filled with backup (and sometimes third-string) signal-callers under center, seeing the pair of New York quarterbacks earn the hardware after Week 14 was perhaps the most stunning feat yet.

It was just over six weeks ago when "Tommy Cutlets" made his NFL debut on Oct. 29 at MetLife Stadium against Wilson and the Jets.

DeVito entered the Week 8 contest in the second quarter after No. 2 quarterback Tyrod Taylor suffered a rib cage injury. The undrafted rookie's numbers against Gang Green's stellar defense were ugly, finishing 2-for-7 for -1 passing yard and a 39.6 quarterback rating while adding four carries for 12 yards and one touchdown.

After another brutal outing during his first career start in Week 10 vs. the Cowboys (14-for-27, 86 passing yards, 67.8 quarterback rating), DeVito turned it around beginning in Week 11 against the Washington Commanders. The Syracuse and Illinois product has led the G-Men to three straight wins, going 52-for-72 (72.2%) for 595 passing yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions over the stretch, while adding 16 carries for 84 yards.

He's also produced quarterback ratings of over 100 in all three games and set career highs in completion percentage (81.0%), rushing attempts (10) and rushing yards (71) against the Packers.

Following a disastrous first two NFL seasons, Wilson got another chance to show why he was the second overall pick in 2021 when Aaron Rodgers went down with an Achilles injury in Week 1.

It's been a roller coaster ride for the former BYU Cougar since then, as he's gone 4-6 in 11 games (10 starts) while posting a career-best 60.8% completion percentage, a 78.2 quarterback rating and just eight touchdowns against seven interceptions. Wilson's also been sacked a whopping 42 times and coughed up 10 fumbles.

Since the 24-year-old's taken over, the Jets have endured a pair of three-game losing streaks, but a three-game winning streak as well. Wilson led the team on three fourth-quarter comebacks, including two game-winning drives.

He went 17-for-36 for 240 passing yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, while losing two fumbles in the head-to-head matchup against DeVito in Week 8.

Wilson was also benched in favor of fifth-year pro Tim Boyle midway through Week 11 vs. the Buffalo Bills and as the starter in Weeks 12 and 13. Boyle was then released last week, leading to Wilson being reinstated as QB1.

Wilson posted career highs in completion percentage (75.0%) and quarterback rating (117.9) in the upset over the Texans on Sunday, while recording a season-high 301 passing yards.

For one week at least, all is right on the gridiron in the Big Apple.
