Is former All-Pro Aldon Smith's NFL career over?

Former All-Pro Aldon Smith's professional football career has been littered off-the-gridiron issues.

That same narrative reared its ugly head this week when the one-time Pro Bowl defensive end was released by the Seattle Seahawks for reportedly "violating the team's trust," sources told ESPN.

The question now is how many more chances is the league going to give the 31-year-old, whose extracurriculars off the field continue to overshadow his work life?

Since being drafted seventh overall by the 49ers in 2011, he has had constant run-ins with the law, including multiple DUIs and being charged with vandalism and violent crimes. While he displayed dominance on the field, he also was arrested for making false bomb threats and possessing illegal weapons, among other things, when he was off the clock. His issues with alcoholism and his inability to follow the league's substance abuse policy then resulted in an indefinite suspension — one that was only lifted in 2020 as he was signed to the Dallas Cowboys after missing four straight seasons.

Just a little over a year later, Smith was let go from yet another team despite reportedly receiving immense support from the Seahawks staff. Even when Smith was brought up on second-degree assault charges shortly after signing with Seattle in April, the team stayed in his corner and tried giving him the opportunity to turn things around.

While the details regarding Smith's violation of Seattle's trust have not been made public just yet, it looks like another unfortunate turn of events for the talented defensive end. It appears that there are members of the NFL who want to support Smith and set him on the straight and narrow, yet he keeps falling back into the same detrimental habits.

After the most recent reports, it's safe to wonder how many more chances he is going to get.
