Jared Goff on facing Rams: 'Of course you have the chip on your shoulder'

Reports surfaced back in January that the relationship between Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Jared Goff was "not great," and the Rams ultimately shipped Goff to the Detroit Lions in a trade that landed Los Angeles signal-caller Matthew Stafford in return.

While Stafford and the Rams are 5-1, Goff and the Lions began the regular season with six straight defeats ahead of this Sunday's matchup between those two teams in Los Angeles. According to Lindsey Thiry of ESPN, McVay admitted earlier this week he wished "there was better, clearer communication" between everyone involved ahead of the trade. Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Goff spoke during his Wednesday press conference about returning to face the Rams in Week 7.

"It’ll be fun to see all those people and it’ll be fun to be there and of course you’re motivated," Goff explained. "Of course you have the chip on your shoulder — I’ve spoken about that. There was some disrespect felt toward the end. There was some sourness toward the end. And you still feel that, you still have that chip on your shoulder.

"But at the same time, when the game starts, if I let any of that come into how I’m going to play the game, it would be selfish. And I’m going to play the game just how I would any other game. And to be honest, I’m not worried about feeling some type of way once the game starts. I really don’t."

The Rams are coming off a 38-11 road win at the lowly New York Giants, while the Lions fell to the Cincinnati Bengals 34-11 at home this past Sunday. Goff may feel hyped to prove something to McVay and company, but his words don't erase the reality that the Lions and Rams are heading in very different directions this fall.
