Jets' C.J. Mosley on Zach Wilson: 'Everybody in the building has his back'

New York Jets veteran linebacker C.J. Mosley came to the defense of quarterback Zach Wilson on Monday.

"He always owns up to his mistakes, he's owned up to everything that he does," Mosley explained coming off Sunday's 22-17 home loss to the New England Patriots that featured Wilson throwing three interceptions, per Colin Martin of SNY. "When he does talk to us, when we do say what's up to each other in the building, he's always saying that he has to do better. He's an NFL player man, he knows exactly what's going on. He knows what winning football looks like and he knows what losing football looks like.

"When it comes to making sure his head in the right place or having his back, everybody in the building has his back. Everybody knows what he's capable of and he knows what he's capable of. So it's our job as a defense to get off the field, get them good field position, get turnovers, and score points. And it's the offense's job to protect him, catch the ball, run the ball, all those things, everything works together. That's what we want to do here, play good complementary football and win games together because we all are going to need each other at some point this season."

As SNY's Connor Hughes noted, Wilson admitted shortly after Sunday's defeat that dropped the Jets to 5-3 on the season that he needs "to be better" moving forward. On Monday, Mosley was asked if the 30-year-old and others inside the locker room are losing patience because Wilson is no longer a rookie.

"I don't think so," Mosley answered. "When he is out there, Zach is out there trying to make a play, getting out of the pocket, spinning, stopping, doing all kinds of things. Whether it comes with time on task, whether it comes with working drills, whatever the case might be for the offensive side. I feel that, at least from my opinion, we're not really stressed about that."

Wilson performed so poorly against New England that retired signal-caller and one-time Pro Bowl selection Matt Cassel said he thinks head coach Robert Saleh should bench the second overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft in favor of veteran Joe Flacco even though Saleh gave Flacco's role as Wilson's primary backup to Mike White on Sunday. It's thought the Jets could look to move Flacco to a different team before Tuesday's trade deadline.

Wilson has thus far played in just five games this season but is statistically one of the league's worst quarterbacks heading into November. According to ESPN stats, he's 34th among eligible players with a 71.0 passer rating, 24th with a 41.8 total QBR and 34th with a 54.9% completion percentage. He's combined three touchdown passes and a rushing score with five interceptions.

Wilson will look to get right when the Jets host the 6-1 Buffalo Bills this Sunday.
