Kansas City Chiefs DL coach Joe Cullen quietly signed a contract extension ahead of Super Bowl LVIII
Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs are already looking toward the 2024 NFL season and a potential three-peat with a win in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

They're also looking to run it back with as many of the same members of the team as humanly possible. That might be tough with plenty of pending free agents for the 2024 NFL offseason, but the Chiefs have already made a step toward retaining a key piece for the upcoming year.

Speaking on ESPN's "Pat McAfee Show," NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed that the Chiefs quietly signed defensive line coach Joe Cullen to a contract extension. This came on the back of  reports that two NFL teams and a college program had an interest in Cullen for their defensive coordinator position.

"Even their defensive line coach, (Joe) Cullen, was in demand by other NFL teams and college teams," Schefter told McAfee. "Very quietly last week, they get an extension done for him to make sure he doesn't leave. So they ensured continuity on their staff and the players are going to want to be back."

Cullen has been with the Chiefs since the 2022 NFL season, joining after a season as the defensive coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He previously has spent time as the defensive line coach with the Baltimore Ravens, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions.

Andy Reid and Travis Kelce both committed to another year when speaking to the media following the Super Bowl LVIII win as well. A big question surrounds DT Chris Jones. Will he be back with the team after a tenuous contract situation that led to a holdout ahead of the 2023 NFL season?

Will Chris Jones join Joe Cullen in his return to the Chiefs

Jones said ahead of Super Bowl LVIII that he didn't know if that would be his last game with the Chiefs, but after how things went on Sunday, it's hard to imagine a situation where they don't meet some common ground. At least that's what NFL insider Adam Schefter seems to believe.

"Chris Jones, by the way, I know he'll want to get paid, but there is certainly a bond there," Schefter explained. "You can see the way that he and Andy Reid were acting after the game. I don't think he's going to want to leave unless there is some huge difference in offers. And the Chiefs value him, they want him back. So to me, yeah, they are gonna run it back with a lot of this team intact."

To Schefter's point about ensuring continuity on the staff, having Steve Spagnuolo and Joe Cullen, both of whom Jones adores, can only help their chances of re-signing him. Ensuring staff continuity is one of the best ways outside of financial flexibility to keep players around for a long time.

"So, yeah, the overwhelming majority of this team is back to run it back in 2024," Schefter concluded.
