Kansas City Chiefs Playmaker Named One of NFL’s Most Underpaid Players
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs have masterfully built through the NFL Draft in recent years, adding value and star power around MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but, cornerback Trent McDuffie may be general manager Brett Veach’s best draft bargain to date.

Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon named the most underrated player on every roster across the league and revealed McDuffie tops the list for the Chiefs.

“The first-team All-Pro sophomore is slated to count just $7.3 million against the Chiefs’ salary cap,” Gagnon writes for B/R. “In the next two seasons combined.”

Trent McDuffie Already a Kansas City Chiefs Cornerstone Player

McDuffie has certainly more than lived up to his billing as a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Through his first two seasons, McDuffie has played lockdown cornerback, and made critical plays in each of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victories over that span.

With four career sacks and 124 total tackles, McDuffie has proven capable of defending some of the league’s most explosive receivers on an island.

Last season, McDuffie held opposing receivers to only 10.7 yards per reception when going up against him during the 2023 season.

For Veach and Kansas City, McDuffie’s value is the gift that’s about to keep on giving. The former No. 21 overall pick in the draft still has two more years remaining on his rookie deal as well as a potential fifth-year option.

After Kansas City traded away L’Jarious Sneed to the Tennessee Titans earlier this offseason, McDuffie is primed to play an even larger role in the Chiefs’ secondary beginning in 2024.
