Although the Detroit Lions acquired Jared Goff from the Los Angeles Rams this offseason in exchange for Matthew Stafford, the franchise was still considering selecting a quarterback in this year's draft.
With Justin Fields and Mac Jones still on the board when the Lions were on the clock at No. 7, Detroit chose offensive tackle Penei Sewell instead. General manager Brad Holmes said he would've considered a quarterback if one was rated higher than Sewell.
"If there was a quarterback that was just like graded way higher over Penei we would have had to strongly consider that," Holmes said, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. "But it unfortunately for our sakes, it wasn't — Penei was the highest-rated guy when we took him."
The Lions appear comfortable with their selection of Sewell, but could regret passing on Fields, who they will now see twice a year after he was selected by the Chicago Bears.
Still, if Goff doesn't work out this season, the Lions should be able to use some of the picks they received in the Stafford trade as draft capital to find their quarterback of the future. North Carolina's Sam Howell, Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler and USC's Kedon Slovis are projected to be the top quarterbacks in next year's draft.
