One trade, cut and signing the Kansas City Chiefs should make

The Kansas City Chiefs just captured their third Super Bowl in five years, cementing their status as a dynasty. Could they become the first team in league history to three-peat? To accomplish this feat, K.C. must be aggressive this offseason.

With that in mind, here are a trade, cut and signing the Chiefs should make.

TRADE: Move up in the draft and take a wide receiver

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes needs better targets. Per Pro Football Reference, the Chiefs had the most drops (44) in the league this past season.

In his latest mock draft, NFL.com's Chad Reuter projected Kansas City to trade three picks (including No. 32 overall) to the Green Bay Packers to move up to No. 25 and select Florida State WR Keon Coleman.

ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. rated the 20-year-old as his sixth-best wideout in a deep position group. In his final season with the Seminoles, Coleman tied for 11th in the FBS in receiving touchdowns with 11 in 12 games. He could become a difference-maker under head coach Andy Reid.

CUT: WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling

OTC estimates the Chiefs have $15.2M in cap space, meaning they must clear more room. The 29-year-old Valdes-Scantling is a clear cut candidate. In 16 games during the 2023-24 campaign, he only logged 21 receptions for 315 yards and one touchdown. He also has the team's sixth-highest cap hit ($14M).

Releasing him would save the franchise $12M. The Chiefs could use these savings to upgrade their O-line – which allowed the fourth-most pressures (164) in the league – or re-sign one of their defensive stars.

SIGNING: Defensive tackle Chris Jones

Arguably the second-best DT in the NFL behind Los Angeles Rams veteran Aaron Donald, Jones just posted 10.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss and 39 pressures in 16 games, earning a second consecutive first-team All-Pro nod. Pro Football Focus gave him an 88.1 grade, fifth at his position.

According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, franchise tagging Jones again would cost $32.16M. Giving him a long-term deal makes more sense. Last offseason, he reportedly wanted a contract worth $30M per year.

That's not cheap, but the Chiefs can make it happen. CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones has reported Kansas City and Mahomes will likely restructure his contract to save $37M, which would help them re-sign the 29-year-old Jones.
