Packers In Line To Add Three Additional Picks In 2024 NFL Draft

The Green Bay Packers are poised to receive three compensatory picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, as projected by Nick Korte of OverTheCap.com, a renowned authority on the subject.

Korte’s prediction suggests that the Packers will secure a fifth-round pick as compensation for losing Allen Lazard to the Jets, a sixth-round pick for parting ways with Jarran Reed to the Seahawks, and a seventh-round pick for Dean Lowry’s departure to the Vikings.

These compensatory picks are allocated through a formula that remains somewhat mysterious, even to team executives. As per the NFL’s explanation, the primary factor determining the pick’s placement is the average annual salary of the departed player.

In the aftermath of last year’s initial free agency frenzy, Korte initially anticipated a fifth-round pick for Lazard. Lazard’s four-year, $44 million contract with the New York Jets made him the highest-paid receiver in free agency, teetering on the border between a fourth and fifth-round compensation, according to Korte.

During his spring projection, Korte had hopes that Lazard’s pick might rise to the fourth round if he saw significant playing time. However, Lazard’s performance took a downturn, as he was a healthy inactive three times towards the end of the season, with his statistics plummeting from 60 receptions for 788 yards and six touchdowns in 2022 to 23 catches for 311 yards and one touchdown in 2023.

The official announcement from the NFL regarding these compensatory picks is expected to come just before the commencement of free agency on March 13.

The Packers are presented with an excellent opportunity to bolster their ever-improving roster in this year’s draft. With the second-round pick acquired in the Aaron Rodgers trade and the third-round pick obtained in the Rasul Douglas deal, the Packers are projected to possess five selections within the top 91 picks.

When added to the compensatory picks, the Packers’ total draft haul will consist of 11 selections.

It’s worth noting that in 2023, the Packers only received a compensatory pick in the seventh round, which went to receiver Grant DuBose. In 2022, Zach Tom was among the three comp picks they acquired. Additionally, star running back Aaron Jones was a fifth-round compensatory pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
