Packers' Jordan Love 'happy' Aaron Rodgers signed extension?

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love served as the backup behind future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers through the majority of his first two NFL seasons. He may have thought following Green Bay's playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers this past January that he'd find himself atop the depth chart by Memorial Day. That won't be happening, as Rodgers put pen to paper on an extension in March that could be worth over $150 million across the next three campaigns.

Rodgers is currently skipping at least the early days of Green Bay's voluntary organized team activities, and that decision has left Love as the club's temporary QB1. The 23-year-old spoke with reporters Tuesday and, according to Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, said he was "super happy" Rodgers signed such a lucrative deal months ago.

"Obviously, the dude deserves it [with] what he’s done the last two years," Love explained. "But personally for me, it just means that I’m about to be a backup again — for this year. And that’s all I can control right now. So I was happy for Aaron, but at the same time it’s like, 'ah.' You know?"

The conclusion of Love's comments may be doing some heavy lifting, as he probably realizes he could find himself on the trade market this summer if a different team loses its starting signal-caller.

"And now that he’s signed, he’s back, I don’t think it changes anything for me," Love added about Rodgers' decision to return to Green Bay. "Like I said, I’m still here. I’m still going to do my job and I’m competing to try to be that guy if he wasn’t here, if he is here. So, he’s not here right now, so I’m the one getting all the 1s reps. So I look at it as I’m the guy right now."

The Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks continue to be linked in rumors with quarterbacks such as Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns and Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers, and it's unclear if either club is interested in Love. Whatever team has Love on its roster will have to make a call about the fifth-year option attached to his rookie contract next spring.
