Panthers pick up fifth-year option on QB Sam Darnold

When the Carolina Panthers passed on both Justin Fields and Mac Jones with the eighth-overall pick, it was a clear sign that they planned to roll with Sam Darnold as their quarterback in 2021.

Carolina confirmed that on Friday by picking up Darnold's fifth-year option. The move guarantees his $18.858 million contract for 2022.

The Panthers acquired Darnold earlier this month from the New York Jets, who selected BYU quarterback Zach Wilson second-overall pick on Thursday.

Carolina's decision to commit to Darnold was also apparent after the franchise traded Teddy Bridgewater to the Denver Broncos earlier this week.

Although Darnold struggled in three seasons with the Jets, the Panthers believe he'll be able to reach his potential in a new setting. General manager Scott Fitterer said earlier this week that the team has a "strong plan in place" for the young quarterback.

The Panthers also picked up wide receiver D.J. Moore's $11.116 million option. Moore, who has two consecutive seasons of 1,000-plus yards, will be one of Darnold's top targets in 2021.
