Recent Texans' trade could spark AFC foe to propose a move to Houston
Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

On Wednesday, the Houston Texans shocked the world when they traded for star receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills. Now, they have the best wide receiver three in the league and easily the best trio of wide receivers in the league.

But, the recent move has sparked a conversation regarding one of their young wide receivers. They now have several guys at the wide receiver position on the roster and will likely have to make some tough decisions regarding how many they want to keep on the 53-man roster before the season starts.

So, a conversation started about the Texans trading one of the guys who sits below the big three receivers on the depth chart. The main guy in talks now is former Alabama wide receiver John Metchie III. A to Z Sports' Charles Goldman thinks the Kansas City Chiefs should trade for Metchie.

The Chiefs have shown prior interest in Metchie, having hosted him on a top-30 visit ahead of the 2022 NFL draft. He went six spots ahead of the KCs original second-round draft pick (which they ultimately traded to the Patriots). He went ten slots before KC selected Skyy Moore in the 2022 NFL draft. If the Texans hadn't taken Metchie, it's possible that the Chiefs could have considered him in the second round.

Compensation required to acquire Metchie would also likely be minimal for the Chiefs. He hasn't been a big producer for Houston thus far. He's in danger of getting cut with all of the players in the Texans WR room. Getting something for him is much better than just having to cut him outright in 53-man cutdowns. After trading away a fifth-round pick in 2025 for Diggs, Kansas City could likely offer a Day 3 pick in return for Metchie, maybe even just a conditional draft pick.

While Metchie going to the Kansas City Chiefs would likely be a much better situation for him, as their best wide receivers are Rashee Rice, who was just a rookie, and Hollywood Brown, on a one-year deal, he would certainly get more time to develop. He would likely be the third-best receiver on the team in Kansas City.

While I do think the Texans would trade him, I think the Chiefs would have to offer something good. Metchie basically just played his rookie year and was a second-round pick. He still has a ton of upsides but has had some pretty serious obstacles trying to get in his way. Goldman mentioned that Metchie is in danger of getting cut, and I disagree with that. If there is anyone they will cut, it would likely be Robert Woods, who saves them $4 million in cap space with the move.

While I don't know if this particular move happens, there is a good chance that the Texans are not done making moves.
