Report: Colts 'in the mix for' 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo after Carson Wentz trade

Those associated with the Indianapolis Colts made it clear shortly after the conclusion of this past regular season they were just about done with quarterback Carson Wentz after having him for a single campaign, and reports surfaced Wednesday that Indianapolis will officially be shipping the 29-year-old to the Washington Commanders when the new league year opens next week.

Colts get:
2022 third-round pick
2023 third-round pick that can become a second if Carson Wentz plays 70 percent of plays.

Commanders get:

It appears the Colts could use some of those assets to land Wentz's replacement.

Shortly after word of Wednesday's deal broke, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport linked the Colts with San Francisco 49ers veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

At the NFL Scouting Combine last week, 49ers general manager John Lynch insisted that "a lot of teams have interest" in Garoppolo even though the 30-year-old recently underwent surgery to repair a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder he first suffered during San Francisco's wild-card playoff win at the Dallas Cowboys on Jan. 16. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo noted "the plan and hope" is that Garoppolo will be able to resume throwing exercises by training camp as the 49ers prepare to promote 2021 rookie Trey Lance to the role of QB1 this spring.

It was reported last week that the trade market for Garoppolo "could be as low as a Day 3" draft selection. That was before the Commanders, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals all seemingly took themselves out of discussions for an option such as Jimmy G this offseason.

Thus, the Colts may feel they can get an upgrade at quarterback and do so at a discount as long as they can medically clear Garoppolo coming off his procedure.
