Richard Sherman vows to get help following arrest incident

Free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman took to social media Friday to address his early Wednesday morning arrest at his wife's parents' home near Seattle that has left him facing five misdemeanor charges.

"I am deeply remorseful for my actions on Tuesday night," Sherman wrote in a statement shared by ESPN. "I behaved in a manner I am not proud of. I have been dealing with some personal challenges over the last several months, but that is not an excuse for how I acted. The importance of mental and emotional health is extremely real and I vow to get the help I need. I appreciate all of the people who have reached out in support of me and my family, including our community here in Seattle. I am grateful to have such an amazing wife, family and support system to lean on during this time." 

ESPN reports Sherman is facing domestic violence charges of criminal trespass in the second degree and malicious mischief in the third degree, as well as resisting arrest, driving while under the influence and reckless endangerment of roadway workers.

Authorities say the three-time First-Team All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection crashed a vehicle into a cement freeway barrier before he allegedly attempted to break into his in-laws' home. A police report states that Raymond Moss, Sherman's father-in-law, used pepper spray to keep the defensive back outside the home, where Sherman reportedly got into an altercation with police and was apprehended with the use of a K9 unit. 

ESPN adds King County prosecutors and the sheriff obtained an "extreme risk protection order'' for Sherman this past February which prevented the 33-year-old from having guns after a judge ruled that Sherman could be a danger to himself and/or others. 

Audio of a 911 call made early Wednesday morning features a woman who identifies herself as Ashley Moss, Sherman's wife, saying her husband was drunk, threatening suicide and had gotten physical with a family member. 

Sherman was released without bail after a Thursday hearing.
