Ryan Fitzpatrick reveals what 49ers' Trey Lance must fix to save his NFL career

Less than three years removed from being the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Trey Lance appears to be at a career crossroads. Once perceived as the future under center for the San Francisco 49ers, Lance was recently demoted to third string on the Niners depth chart, then traded to the Cowboys for a mid-round pick.

On Thursday, retired 17-year NFL veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, now an analyst for Amazon's "Thursday Night Football" coverage, joined "The Pat McAfee Show" to discuss the looming doubts surrounding Lance and what the quarterback must do to salvage his career.

"I still think there’s an opportunity," Fitzpatrick said of Lance's chances of developing into a true NFL quarterback. "I think accuracy is his biggest thing, but it's not his fault that he was overdrafted. I mean he got way overdrafted getting pick third."

Despite attempting only 318 passes over his collegiate career at North Dakota State, Lance's raw skill set and upside were intriguing enough for the 49ers to mortgage their future on. The team traded away three first-round picks in order to move up in the draft to select Lance.

A player whose development is in desperate need of in-game reps, Lance has struggled to see the field over his two-year career in San Francisco, appearing in only eight games. When he has logged snaps, he's struggled mightily with accuracy. His career 54.9% completion percentage ranks dead last among the five first-round quarterbacks from his draft class.

"His accuracy I think right now Is his biggest issue that he’s got to somehow go in and fix," Fitzpatrick added. "For him, he’s so young. He hasn’t played that much football. It’s a tough thing to become accurate as you get older, but he’s so young that I think there’s still a chance. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be in San Fran."

Still just 23 years old, Lance has time to rewrite his career, and now it will happen in Dallas. With only 420 passing attempts to his name since graduating from Marshall Senior High School in Minnesota, Lance now gets a fresh start with a team that has an established QB1.
